Original title: Angelo, Tyran de Padoue
With Angelo, Hugo returns to Théâtre-Française, which admitted it with acclamations. It was a prose drama similar to Lucréce Borgia; a courtesan brought back to virtue by a single noble sensation. Mademoiselle Mars and Marie Dorval were cast in the two leading roles and Hugo did not dare to suggest Juliette Drouet this time.
The play premiered 28 April 1835 and was a hit - it ran for 62 nights. It was well written and the performances of the two actresses Mars and Dorval added to the success.
