This is essentially a compilation of old letters and articles from Le Conservateur Littéraire, published 1819-1821. Hugo arbitrarily changed the texts to fit the image of him he wanted to display in these autobiographical volumes, while ensuring - in the preface - the reader that no alterations had been made. He also manufactured new texts, dating them a decade earlier, to fill in the blanks
