Albert Capellani had been chosen by Charles Pathé to head a new company, S.C.A.G.L., which goal was to adapt great works of French literature to the screen. Capellani became a pioneer in producing feature length footage in an industry dominated by short and medium length films.
In the production of this early French adaptation, Gothic Paris was reconstructed entirely in a studio. Shot in 35 mm, it was restored in time for the celebrations of 100 years of cinematography. So there is a good copy of this one out there, somewhere...
