With Maurice Costello as Jean Valjean and J. Stuart Blackton as director, Hugo's masterpiece was presented by Vitagraph in four parts -- "The Galley Slave" (rel. Sept. 4, '09), Valjean's early life, arrest, imprisonment, the meeting with the Bishop; "Fantine" (rel. Sept. 25, '09), Jean as the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer; "Cosette" (rel. Oct. 23, '09), the rescue of Cosette and the coffin incident; and "Jean Valjean" (rel. Nov. 27, '09), the rest of the story concluding with Jean's death.
