La Esmeralda, 1905

Based on: The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

In 1905, the French production company Gaumont built the La Villette studios - the largest in Europe. Alice Guy Blaché directed Gaumont's first production there, La Esmeralda, which is also the first known Hugo adaptation for the screen I've come across.

Alice Guy Blaché was the first woman filmmaker in the world, and at the age of 78, she was honored in France at the Cinematheque Francais, and made a knight of the French Legion of Honor.
