A two-part Japanese version, set in Japan during the Meija era in the late 19th century. Entitled "Jean Valjean," the 1931 production was the final silent film adaptation of the great novel. It was directed by Tomu Uchida and starred Nobuo Asaoka as Jean Valjean.
