The Duke's Jester, 1909

Also known as: A Fool's Revenge
Based on: The King takes his Amusement

J. Stuart Blackton, a New York World cartoonist, was hired by Thomas Edison and created the first American animated film, Enchanted drawings and other trick films. He then co-founded Vitagraph films and made a fortune he later lost. Vitagraph actor Maurice Costello is probably best known as the first screen Sherlock Holmes.

1909 marked a boost in Hugo adaptations by Vitagraph - Blackton also directed The Hunchback, Les Misérables and Ruy Blas this year (and maybe more that I haven't found any record of).
