The Darling of Paris, 1917

Lacking the grotesque appearance he suffers from in the novel, Quasimodo gains the love of Esmeralda in this American adaptation. The film was released again in 1919 with an alternative ending - Esmeralda dies and Quasimodo kills the treacherous clergyman responsible for her death.

Theda Bara was the femme fatale in those days and some found it very strange that she was cast as the innocent Esmeralda.
