Edison released the story in a series of three one-reel episodes directed by Edwin S. Porter -- "The Price of a Soul" (rel. Aug. 13, '09), dramatizing the incident with the Bishop of Digne, "The Ordeal" (rel. Sept. 21, '09), Jean Valjean's life as M. Madeleine, mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, and "A New Life" (rel. Oct. 12, '09), Jean's escape from the galleys, rescue of Cosette, and his adventure in the coffin at the convent. Edison doesn't seem to have dramatized the story beyond the second volume, "Cosette."
