Quassimodo d'el Paris, 1998

Attracted by the title in the TV guide, I zapped my way to French TV5 one afternoon. "Quasimodo d'el Paris" - a new French adaptation of the classic, I assumed. Knowing I would have to get by without subtitles, I made myself comfortable in the couch and waited.

The film was set in 1998. Quasimodo wore a basketball shirt and played Nintendo. Esmeralda was a redhead. Frollo had a stiff finger - giving the bird through the entire film. Phoebus was a Bruce Lee-inspired cop having eyes only for Esmeraldas voluptuous body.

Don't get scared - this French comedy is really funny and I think Old Vic would have some good laughs. I didn't understand much of the dialogue, but still - if you know your bell ringer you'll enjoy it.

It's available on DVD in France - without subtitling.
