Les Misérables, 1995

This is not an adaptation of Les Misérables. Instead, it's more of an homage to it with resemblances both in theme and plot. It's set by the turn of the century and the decades following to the end of WWII. Henry Fortin, an illiterate who tumbles from one side of the law to the other, runs a small moving business and agrees to help the jewish family Ziman to get out of a France influenced by the Nazis. Fortin is fascinated by Les Miserables and Mr Ziman reads it out loud to him in the truck and whenever they meet.

We're also given the stories of Fortin's father and mother, victims of injustices à la Valjean.

Through the film, cuts from the 1933 French adaptation give reference to the main story.

I liked it a lot and I recommend you to see it if you get a chance. It's a great picture.
