Les Misérables, 1935
A very American adaptation; the story is altered to fit the political mainstream of the 30's and it wasn't proper to portray a prostitute as sympathetic - Fantine never walks the streets in this one.
In 1936, it received four Acadamy Award nominations; Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Assistant Director and Best Cinematography.
Laughton and Hardwicke met again in the 1939 adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
