The Bishop's Candlesticks, 1929

In 1929, the first sound film adaptation of "Les Miserables" was released by Paramount. A two-reel film also entitled "The Bishop's Candlesticks" and adapted from the early section of Hugo's masterpiece dealing with Jean's reclamation by the Bishop, it was filmed at Paramount's Astoria, Long Island studio, was directed by Norman McKinnell and starred Walter Huston as Valjean in his film debut.
