Aa Mujo, 1929

The Nikkatsu company became the first Japanese studio to dramatize Hugo's entire story in their two-part 1929 silent adaptation also entitled "Aa Mujo." Directed by Seika Shiba and starring Nobuo Asaoka as Jean Valjean, it was set in Japan sometime in the samurai era prior to the Meji Restoration.
